Mobility Plan

  • City's Transportation Blog
  • Dan Burden's Walkability Principles (pdf)

The goal of this project is to prepare a Citywide Mobility Plan that will support the City's vision of providing more transportation choices and strengthening bicycle, pedestrian, and transit opportunities within Ventura and the surrounding region. Preparation of the Mobility Plan is a key action from the 2005 General Plan.

What is a Mobility Plan? It's a holistic approach to looking at transportation issues and how to improve access to many forms of transportation to provide more choices for residents, employees, and visitors to the community. The Mobility Plan will recognize that balancing automobile usage with other means of travel is essential to maintaining social, physical, and environmental health. It will provide a strategy to help transition the City from automobile dependence, in part, by engaging the community to create a shared vision of transportation that relates to its environment, quality of life, and living standards.

The City has hired a multidisciplinary project team of planners, engineers, urban designers, and architects headed up by Fehr & Peers Transportation Consultants. A City Council AdHoc Transportation Policy Committee created specifically for this project is guiding City staff and the Consultant team through the effort. This team is working to create a multimodal transportation system that will meet the challenges ahead.

Over the next two years, the consulting team, along with help from the City and public, will develop a plan that addresses transit, pedestrian, bicycle, streetscape, parking, and motor vehicle circulation needs and how they interact. These elements will guide the implementation of Ventura's model smart growth policies over the next 20 years. The Plan is also being designed to seamlessly integrate with the City's new General Plan that strongly promotes compact, highly walkable communities and infill development.

Mobility Speaker Series

Members of the public are invited to attend and encouraged to participate in these presentations. This speaker series is part of a City-sponsored initiative called "Ventura on the MOVE: Mobility Options for Ventura's Environment" -- aimed at helping the City achieve its General Plan goal of providing more transportation choices by strengthening and balancing alternative mobility opportunities in Ventura and the surrounding region.
